OTTAWA — Freedom of the press is declining in Canada, according to an annual ranking of 175 countries by the international media watchdog Reporters Without Borders.

Released Tuesday, the index places Canada at No. 19, a drop of six spots from 2008.

Canada's ranking was based on three particular factors, including the ability of journalists to protect their sources, limits on freedom of access to information, and the existence of lawsuits that act as a deterrent for public participation. (more)

I think being in the top 20 is a pretty good result. There are things that could change, for example some laws that favor the people now the press, but overall, the press does a pretty good job in this country. I think it gives us a pretty relevant picture of what's happening all around us.

Take care, Julie
