Presenting The 350 Pledge to Colin Mayes, MP for Okanagan-Shuswap

NEWS RELEASE: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 21, 2009, Vernon, BC

A group of concerned citizens will be meeting at 10:00 am, Friday, October 23, outside the Public Library in Vernon (3001 - 32nd Ave) in order to hand over a collection of 350 Pledges to our local MP, Colin Mayes. People have been signing the 350 Pledge over the past weeks, in order to:

-Demonstrate their commitment to action by listing one significant action they have taken or are taking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
-Demand a similar commitment from their government representative, to support a goal of 350 ppm at the Copenhagen Summit.

350 ppm (parts per million) is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. We are already at close to 400 ppm so reductions are urgently needed.

The plan for the event this Friday is:

- At 10:00 am, pledge-signers and other members of the public will have the opportunity to stand on a melting ‘icebox’ (instead of a soapbox) to describe their particular emissions-reducing effort.
- At 10:15 am, the group will walk over to Colin Mayes office in order to hand over the signed pledge sheets.
People at the event will be holding red-needled pine branches, symbolizing a major local impact of climate change, the pine bark beetle infestation that is killing our forests.
