New Top Cop

The new boss of the Vernon and North Okanagan RCMP plans to put more emphasis on getting prolific offenders off the streets. RCMP_logoInspector Reg Burgess has been named the detachment commander, a position he held on an interim basis since June. The 28 year RCMP veteran says he will take a slightly different approach than his predecessor, Steve McVarnock. "He was concentrating more on the crack shacks and grow ops in town. I hope to do a little bit more work with prolific offenders, not just the enforcement side but all the initiatives that go with that." Prolific offenders are persistent offenders who frequently have drug problems and commit crime to support their drug habit. Burgess says officers will do more patrols and checks in the downtown to ensure prolific offenders are following their court conditions, and are getting counselling. Inspector Burgess--- who will be promoted to Superintendent when approval is given by Ottawa--- will be in charge of about 100 RCMP officers, including 57 in Vernon, 7 in Coldstream and 30 in the rural areas. The current Kelowna resident plans on getting a house in Vernon next spring, and would like to settle-in as the commander for "many years."
