Attention: open in a new window.
Vernon city council has granted a variance to the new ten million dollar hotel under construction in North Vernon.  The Marriott Fairfield Inn on Anderson Way will be allowed to reduce its parking spaces from 98 to 89 to accommodate a patio, and larger indoor pool. Councillor Brian Quiring says man of the clients are expected to be business-people and bus tours. "According  to the hotel operator, a significant number of people using the hotel will come by bus, and one bus can accommodate roughly 25 rooms, and base on that alone, I don't think we're going to have a parking problem there." City staff had recommended the variance be denied, concerned about where overflow hotel traffic would park during the peak demand periods. The current policy is to have one parking space per hotel room, and the Fairfield will have 98 rooms. Other conditions the owner will have to meet include to develop a travel plan for hotel staff that promotes travel to and from work by carpooling, transit, cycling and walking; to provide enclosed secure bicycle parking for five of the ten required bicycle parking stalls, and to provide end-of-trip facilities for staff who travel by bicycle or by walking. These end-of-trip facilities shall include, at minimum, one shower stall, one sink and five lockers.
