A Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at Kal Tire Place in Vernon. Doors open for seating at 9:30 a.m. and the ceremony begins at 10:15 a.m. A moment of silence will be observed at 11 a.m.



http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kX_3y3u5Uo On November 11, 1999 Terry Kelly was in a Shoppers Drug Mart store in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. At 10:55 AM an announcement came over the store's PA asking customers who would still be on the premises at 11:00 AM to give two minutes of silence in respect to the veterans who have sacrificed so much for us. Terry was impressed with the store's leadership role in adopting the Legion's "two minutes of silence" initiative. He felt that the store's contribution of educating the public to the importance of remembering was commendable.

When eleven o'clock arrived on that day, an announcement was again made asking for the "two minutes of silence" to commence. All customers, with the exception of a man who was accompanied by his young child, showed their respect. Terry's anger towards the father for trying to engage the store's clerk in conversation and for setting a bad example for his child was later channeled into a beautiful piece of work called, "A Pittance of Time". Terry later recorded "A Pittance of Time" and included it on his full-length music CD, "The Power of the Dream".

Opening day will be yet another "Code Purple" day at VJH where admitted patients exceed hospital capacity. Patients will continue to backup in the emergency department for hours and days at a time while they desperately wait for for a stretcher to become available in a hospital hallway, broom closet, or cast room.   We, the citizens of the North Okanagan and Shuswap say the status quo is unacceptable. 
When the Tower of Care opens, it is slated to open with two empty "shelled-in" acute care floors set aside for completion at an undetermined future date.   We say the time to finish these shelled-in floors is now.   We, the citizens of the North Okanagan and Shuswap are petitioning our provincial government to end constant overcapacity at VJH and complete the two shelled in floors now.

Day blasted after suggesting more prisons needed

OTTAWA -- A senior cabinet minister in Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government came under fire Tuesday for suggesting Canada needs to build more prisons in part because of a rise in unreported crimes. "We're very concerned... about the increase in the amount of unreported crimes that surveys clearly show are happening," Day said at a news conference. "People simply aren't reporting the same way they used to." The comments were immediately contradicted by the government's main statistical agency -- and inspired a rapidly spreading Internet video that mocked the minister for not being able to identify the source of his arguments. Day made the remarks as Harper's cabinet and caucus returned to Parliament Hill for a series of meetings to review the government's agenda and economic policies. He said the government was committed to winding down stimulus spending programs to eliminate the deficit, but added planned multibillion-dollar investments in new prisons would be needed to replace aging facilities, deter violent criminals and cope with what he claimed is a rise in unreported crimes. Third reading: City council votes 5-2 in favour of amendments to allow shopping centre plan to go ahead.

City council has approved the necessary amendments for the SmartCentres proposal to proceed.

The final vote was five to two for the official community plan and rezoning amendments, with Mayor Marty Bootsma in favour along with Couns. Kevin Flynn, Chad Eliason, Debbie Cannon and Alan Harrison. Opposed were Couns. Ivan Idzan and Ken Jamieson. Only for an amendment to the rezoning, to limit the footprint of the anchor tenant to 116,000 square-feet, did council vote unanimously in favour. Jamieson was alone in opposing the phased development agreement (PDA), which would lock zoning in place for 10 years and would provide the city with some amenities.

Microphone on as Gregor Robertson swears over speakers after meeting

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson ran afoul of technology last week, forgetting that his microphone was still on while swearing and criticizing speakers who wanted to determine the makeup of a West End community advisory committee. After the meeting, Robertson and several councillors are heard to disparage the speakers, with the mayor asking "who are all these f**cking . . . hacks, man? Are they NPA (Non-Partisan Association) hacks?" His comments, and those of fellow Vision Vancouver councillors Tim Stevenson and Heather Deal, who are also heard to disparage some of the speakers, was posted to YouTube this morning by members of the West End Neighbors, who oppose the city's controversial Short Term Incentives for Rental Housing (STIR) program, which council enacted in July, 2009 to help create more rental housing in the West End. The feed, originally posted automatically to the city's website, remained unchanged until sometime on the weekend. The offending parts were later cut out but numerous unadulterated copies were downloaded by people on Friday and Saturday. The mayor's use of unparliamentary language was sparked after listening to a number of residents who appeared at a committee meeting last Thursday where they objected to council's plan to hand-select 12 people for an advisory committee that would work with developers to ensure the city's housing plans for the area are met. The STIR proposal has run into opposition from a number of people who believe it offers huge benefits to developers who will get incentives and bylaw relaxations in order to build rental housing. A group calling itself West End Neighbors is tracking at least five sites where existing historic rental housing would be replaced with market-rate condominiums and another dozen or more sites are apparently under consideration by developers. Robertson and fellow Vision Vancouver councillors Heather Deal and Tim Stevenson apparently didn't realize that a public audio system attached to the broadcast video feed was left on after the council approved its motions to hand-pick the advisory committee, which will start work in September.

Space probe captures echoes of Big Bang

The smouldering heat left over from the universe’s creation has been captured in unprecedented detail by a deep space observatory behind which Germany is playing a driving role.

But scientists are most excited about the mottled red, purple and yellow sections at the top and bottom of the image. These colours show cosmic microwave background radiation, the light left over from the Big Bang, when the universe sprang into existence 13.7 billion years ago.

The light pattern is a blueprint for how the universe looked immediately after the Big Bang, when it was just a fiery soup of simple particles, before so much as an atom had formed. It took 300,000 years before this blinding energy cooled enough to start forming matter in the long process of making the stars and galaxies around us.
