Centre's Bar In Line For Upgrade

Up to 100-thousand dollars in public funds could be spent to make the bar larger at the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre.The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee committee has agreed to a Request for Proposals on the project.Chair Juliette Cunningham says the facility has trouble meeting the demand for drinks during some events."They seem to have a lack of capacity. The bar area is very small. There's just two small counters and they are separated, so we're trying to join the counter from the one area to the other."Cunningham says the current layout is not able to meet the demand at some higher attended events."People can't get a drink before the intermission is over, so they are just trying to increase their capacity to deal with the volumes."Regional District of North Okanagan staff had originally budgeted 30-thousand dollars for the project, but quotes came back significantly higher than expected.Another project to paint the facility's front doors and windows will be reconsidered for the 2016 budget year.

Performing arts bar garners funds

It will become easier to get a drink at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre, but that comes at a cost. The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee has agreed to spend up to $100,000 on a bar extension in the facility. “Right now they are limited in their capacity for bar service,” said Tannis Nelson, community development co-ordinator. “The expectation is bar service (revenue) will increase.” However, there are some questions about the potential cost even though figures could decrease once formal bids are received from contractors. “One hundred thousand seems like a lot to go out 12 feet,” said Juliette Cunningham, chairperson. Original quotes came back higher than budgeted ($35,000) but the scope of the project has expanded to include a sink and electrical power. “They will add value to the new feature,” said Nelson. In order to proceed with the larger bar, staff wants to use the performing arts centre’s full 2015 capital budget of $100,000. It had included $35,000 for repainting front doors, $35,000 for window painting and $30,000 for the front counter extension. Staff is considering other options to treat the front doors and windows, which will be considered as part of the 2016 budget process. It’s anticipated that the bar project go to tender as soon as possible. “A lot of the mill work, such as cabinetry, could be started before construction,” said Nelson, adding that installation could occur in January or February.
