An Ellison orchardist watched his income go up in smoke Saturday as he burned every apple tree on his 5 hectare property to kill an invading pest. Gurjinder Sandher bought the orchard only only three months ago, but just found out it is infested with the clearwing moth. If left in the orchard, it could spread to other farms this summer within a one kilometre radius. The moth chokes the trees to death eventually. It was first found in a Similkameen orchard in 2005, but is native to Europe. There is no pesticide and no other way to kill the moth other than burning the trees and their roots. The apple trees were brought to the Ellison farm from Keremeos by the previous property owner. The Ellison fire department is providing 24 support to Sandher while he burns his orchard. The regional district provided a special permit for the emergency burn.Sandher is planning to replant next year.
