Residents in an Okanagan Landing neighborhood want better fire protection. Isabel Furtado, president of the Canadian Lakeview Estates Community Association, says the 20 minute response time from the Landing Firehall is not good enough and they want council to consider a new firehall in Bella Vista. Councillor Bob Spiers says its too soon to give an opinion on the idea. "I'll wait for it to come up in budget discussions. We'll see what the budget people bring back to us, whether its feasible and whether it's warranted." Lakeview Estates has more than 300 homes and 750 residents, although some of those are seasonal.
Councillor Jack Gilroy (pictured) would like to see the idea pursued. "It would require additional manpower so it'll be up to council. I think people know how I feel about it, I like to protect people but we also have to think of the taxpayer and the budget." Mayor Wayne Lippert says the request will be considered in budget discussions. "We'll probably look for a report from the (fire) chief to re-look at his plan for the response times not only from the Landing Hall but also from the Vernon hall on first responders and responses from fire." The residents delivered a 271 name petition to council, and say the new hall could also service the Rise, Tavistock and other areas on the west side of the lake.
