Peter McIntyre Sunday, 22 November 2009 107.5 KISSFM:
Spallumcheen residents have elected a new councillor. Christine Fraser won Saturday's by-election in the township with 303 votes. Steve Gunner was second with 245, followed by Dave Derbowka 155, and former council member Terry Frame with 47. Fraser will be sworn into office December 7th and her term will run until the next municipal elections in November 2011. She takes the vacant spot on council previously held by Lorna Bissell who died of breast cancer in September. A frequent visitor in the gallery at township council chambers, Fraser wants "to do stuff to help Spallumcheen."
Fraser had these comments in an article profiling the candidates, November 3 in the Vernon Morning Star: "I see a lot of stuff happening that we need to be a little more progressive and more common-sense thinking," said Fraser, who has lived her entire life in the township and enjoys the rural lifestyle. "I'm a common sense, practical person and I want to try and make a difference." Fraser, who started her family in 2004 and began volunteering with the Terry Fox Foundation, is a former oil and gas pipeline construction labourer and junior inspector. "I think I know what people in Spallumcheen want," she said. "I'm very vocal and I think I can help implement some of the stuff that needs to be done in Spallumcheen, important things like community policing program, West Nile Virus studies, all that kind of stuff."
