KelownaOkanagan Pride highlights a change in the community. That from the Mayor of Kelowna, who spoke at Friday's launch for the events slated for this summer's Pride Week. Sharon Shepherd has already proclaimed Pride Week in the city, something her predecessor, Walter Gray was against about a decade ago. Shepherd says, "Proclamations for Pride Week have identified the importance of being a diverse and tolerant community - including Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Transexual, Queer, Questioning, Two-Spirited, and Allies." Shepherd says Kelowna residents are moving towards being more inclusive. "My style has always been one of compassion, understanding, and balance. That's been part of where I feel I've been trying to take the community." She says, "I've discovered that our citizens are our best advocates for positive growth. And events such as the Okanagan Pride Launch highlights a change that is beginning to shape a new Kelowna." This year's Okanagan Pride week takes place in August. The five day event includes a film screening, golf tournament and family festival. Details can be found at okanaganpride.com.
