Expert Calls Vernon Centre 'Ugly'

The city of Vernon enlisted one of the world's top experts as part of a study to improve accessibility for all residents. Dan Burden has spent more than three decades helping communities focus on the people, instead of the car. He spent three days in Vernon last month taking city staff and stakeholders on a walkability audit in the city centre. Burden makes 16 recommendations in a report to city council that includes the comment that other than the central portion of 30th Avenue, all the streets are "ugly and stark." He calls for more streetscape enhancements, added tree plantings, a variety of housing options, and to put more focus on traffic calming devices like roundabouts, adding speeds in the city centre should not exceed 30 k-m an hour.

Are private venues which enjoy public funds/grants held to the safety/accessibilty standards as their downtown neighbours with respect to special-needs access or egress?

Where is the city in ensuring its grant recipients observe and uphold basic accessibility and safety requirements other downtown stakeholders are compelled to provide?

Once issues pertaining to the streetscape have been addressed, downtown venues ought to be audited to determine if they are universally special-needs friendly and safe. Wheelchair accessible washrooms/stalls, doorways exits and ramps are a start to ensure the same access for all.
