Several dozen students interested in careers in policing are calling the Vernon Army Camp home this week. They're taking part in the 11th annual Jean Minguy Memorial Youth Academy which has 48 cadets. Police spokesman Gord Molendyk says it's been a successful program. "I don't know if they've done formal studies, but I can say many of the young people who have gone there, have gone on to law enforcement careers." This year's participants come from all over the Okanagan and include Minguy's oldest son. The 46 year old constable had been an instructor in the academy prior to his death in a boating accident in 2005, and the following year it was named in his honour. The academy, which uses RCMP officers from around the region as instructors, will hold its graduation on Saturday. The cost per student is $500, but the Vernon School District charges its students $300 to attend.
