Peachland residents have turned a resounding thumbs down to the prospect of a curling club in their community. More than 67% of voters in Saturday's referendum said no to borrowing $1.3 million to construct a Community Curling Club and Multi-Purpose Facility. Nearly 50% of the approximately 4,000 voters turned out for the referendum. 1,303 voters said no while just 633 were in favour. The decision means the project will not go ahead and Peachland will have to return $2.6 million to the provincial and federal governments, their contribution of the project.
The prospect of building the facility divided the community. Those in favour cited the economic benefit to the community while those opposed did not believe the facility would be utilized as much as proponents believed. A yes vote would have resulted in a $35 a year tax increase to residents.
