RV parks sprouting up in Okanagan orchards

Barry McDivitt, CHBC News May 26, 2010 11:03

KELOWNA -- Okanagan farmers say it’s a way to make their businesses viable, but some neighbours believe RV sites are an improper use of farm land. The B.C. Agricultural Land Reserve allows for RV sites on farm property. As less viable orchards have come down, farmers have been looking for ways to make ends meet. “It's the difference between paying the bills and not paying the bills, for sure,” says Ellison farm owner Catalina Dudka. “It's not just about making money, or making more money. It's about making the mortgage payments at the end of the day.” The Dudka family got out of fruit growing years ago, turning to vegetable growing and renting out 10 RV sites. A short distance down the road, Bob Schneider has created 10 new spots on his property. “We have had more compliments from our neighbours than we've had complaints,” says Schneider. Their neighbour, Paula Morrison, is not impressed and has expressed concern about traffic, noise, density and trespassers. But her issue with the ALR land use was not part of a public process, as the Land Commission doesn’t hold public hearings.(More)
