Valuable art stolen from Chimo Gallery

Two valuable pieces art have been stolen from an art gallery in Vernon. RCMP say an intruder alarm was tripped at the Chimo Gallery on 28th Street just after 11 p.m. Thursday. Police learned entry was gained into the business through the front door. "Thieves stole a large amount of cash and two handcrafted boxes. The larger one is made out of yellow cedar and black walnut," says RCMP spokesman, Gord Molendyk. "The smaller box was made from yellow cedar, alder and black walnut. The figures on the boxes are carved and hand painted Haida Native Art." Molendyk says the suspect or suspects left the building though the rear door after smashing through it. He says police were not able to locate any suspects in this theft. Police believe a vehicle was involved in the theft of these items. "Police are asking the public’s help in recovering the art. Each piece is unique -- there are no others like them. The value of the two pieces of artwork is approx $4,000."
