The city of Fort St. John is selling two smart cars only three years after purchasing them.Council voted in favour of selling the two vehicles Monday. The cars had to be parked during the winter months because of safety concerns with driving them during that time, says Don Demurs, the director of public works and utilities.According to Demurs, the cars were purchased for $20,000 each back in the summer of 2007. The cars will be put up for bidding on with a minimum purchase price of $8,500 per vehicle. However, if the city is unsuccessful in selling them through the bidding process, they will then be put on consignment with Transport Honda. He says the city had originally considered the vehicles from an environmental standpoint but says the city takes different factors under consideration when purchasing a vehicle. The city has already purchased a Toyota Rav 4, with four wheel drive, for $30,868 from Peace Country Toyota. He says the mid-sized SUV will be shared between the different departments on a first-come, first-serve basis. The purchase of the new vehicle was done through an open tender process and was selected on the lowest cost.
