July 1 to Sept. 30 Water Rates are $1.10 per Cu. Metre

Water:
* Basic Charge $50.17 per quarter ( includes the first 20 cubic meters of water)
* The first 20 cubic meters is included in the base rate and any additional use is charged at $0.92 per cubic meter
*The first 20 cubic metres is included in the base rate and any additional use is charged at $1.10 per cubic metre during the 3rd Quarter (Summer Surcharge of additional 18 Cents per Cu. Metre) *

1st Quarter January 1 - March 31 April May
2nd Quarter April 1 - June 30 July August
3rd Quarter July 1 - September 30 October November
4th Quarter October 1 - December 31 January February

* The summer surcharge is not yet posted on City's website but is in the NORD bylaw.

Also remember that your actual dates for your 3rd quarter billing may vary depending on the date of your meter reading. (My reading for 2nd quarter was March 12 so I expect my 'Summer Billing Period' to start around June 12.)

That stack of Bottled water or about 12 cu. Metres would cost you $11.04 during the year or $13.20 during the Summer Surcharge Season. (Still well below Toronto's cost of $16.93)

Mind you, your base cost of $50.17 for first 20 cu. m. is an effective rate of $2.51 per unit and this bottled water has an effective cost of $30.12. This is another example of why we must go to incline block plane rates asap. (Vernon apparently had these rates back in 1994. see below.)

Don Quixote Note: (APRIL 18, 2008) I have been pushing for the idea of Inclining Block Rates for at least 5 years. I even have Al Cotsworth on record as saying they are a great idea that they will be pursuing once the water plan matures. That was at least 3 years ago. What does it take for the GVSC to discuss this conservation matter and implement it. For a historical perspective I offer the following part of Vernon's Water History:

Inclining Block Rate Fee Structure
  • In 1994 Vernon adopted flat and increasing block rate pricing structures. The prices, listed below, are designed to reward users for efficient use. As use increases, so too do water rates:

    (a) up to 40 m3/quarter $33
    (b) 41 — 300 m3/quarter $0.34/m3
    (c) greater than 300 m3/quarter $0.56/m3
