NDP Leader Calls For More Beds

NDP leader Adrian Dix meets wiht nurses and others outside VJH (P McIntyre)BC's new NDP leader says if he was premier, Vernon's hospital would get the funding for more beds.  Adrian Dix stopped in Vernon Monday to talk to nurses and support the Purple Ribbon campaign calling for funding for up to 60 more beds in the new tower.  He says staff are doing a miraculous job dealing with the traffic, despite regular overcrowding.  "I think what's happened in Vernon is that the unacceptable bad day has become everyday, and that's what we've got to change."  Dix says the issue has been raised for five years, and included a 21-thousand name petition.  "If you're everyday at 162 (patients) in a hospital with 148 beds, that is not safe, it's not evidence based science. You should not be doing that."  When asked if he would come up with the funding if he was premier, Dix said, ''We would be here, You bet."  Vernon Liberal MLA Eric Foster had this reaction to Dix saying he would come up with the funding.  "I'm not going to comment on that other than it's easy to make promises when you're not the person writing the cheque. My question to Mr. Dix is where does he plan to come up wit the money?"  Foster says talks continue on how to pay for more beds.  It would cost 20 million to equip the two floors, plus 10 million a year for staffing.

Given Adrian Dix's past support and association with Glen Clark, financial incompetence is front and center again.

If one accepts the annual operating staff costs as $10,000,000, then that would require 125 nurses. I believe there is an accepted fact that there is a current nursing shortage in BC and Canada. So where would they get the staffing required.

But the NDP Bolsheviks are good at ranting and railing, but considering their fiscal incompetence in the 90's do we need to risk that again or if ever.

Oh, almost forgot their standard rant that they are looking out for Working Families. Does that include their union buddies earning $50,000 to $100,000 per year?
