Lifeguard Saves Choking Infant

Vernon Rec CentreA city of Vernon employee made all the right moves to prevent what could have been a tragic event. Blaine McKay, the 13 month old child of Melaney McKay swallowed a quarter and started choking while in a change room at the Vernon Rec Complex the morning of January 3rd. Mrs. McKay took her baby to lifeguard Laura Hitchen who immediately dropped to one knee and performed the back blow procedure. A city news release states, "Laura notified another guard to make a 911 call. Laura did six back blows. Blaine screamed and vomited, but no quarter appeared. Laura repeated the back blows 3 - 4 more times and the baby cried and coughed up the quarter. EMT's arrived shortly afterwards." Mrs. McKay says she was "very pleased" how Hitchen handled the situation, adding "she acted like it was an everyday thing." A witness says the lifeguard was "calm, cool and well trained."
