Mayor, councillor quit suddenly in Lillooet

By SUSAN LAZARUK, The Province January 6, 2012 5:25 PM
Lillooet’s mayor confirmed he and a district councillor have resigned a month after they both won the election in a landslide but Ted Anchor wouldn’t say why, except to hint at some unspecified wrongdoing at City Hall. “There’s a whole bunch of reasons,” Anchor told The Province on Friday. “We have to recuse ourselves. We’re not going to be culpable for what they are doing.” He said he and Coun. Kevin Taylor, a former mayor of the Interior town with population of 2,500, have received advice that they have to step down but he wouldn’t say from whom. “I find myself in a very tenuous position and I have no other alternative but to resign,” he said, reading from a prepared media statement. “My credibility and integrity is still intact.” He said he, a former British marine, and Taylor, an ex-paratrooper and an “honourable man,” have “never seen anything like this. We have no choice but to resign.” He said the council in past has been “divisive and dysfunctional.” He wouldn’t elaborate. Counc. Wendy Parker, who was scheduled to be sworn in as acting mayor at a special public meeting Friday, said she was baffled by the terse resignations on Thursday. (more)
