It's not going to save taxpayers much, but Vernon's new mayor felt it was important to send a message. Rob Sawatzky has rejected the 28-hundred dollar a year--or four percent--- mayor's pay hike voted in by the previous council. "It was just symbolic. We spend lots of the taxpayers money, and
there's lots of people in hard times. It's just a symbol that we stand
together with them." It would have raised Sawatzky's pay to just
over 66-thousand dollars, but not taking it was a campaign promise made
by the retired doctor. "We will be making decisions that will annoy many people, and they
have to understand that we're part of the process too. We suffer just
like them." It means the mayor and six councillors all won't get raises until
2014 when they're set for 8.2 percent boosts to make up for cost of
living increases between 2010 and 2014.--------
