RCMP have released the name of a Vernon man who died after being hit by a vehicle last week. 93 year old John Breitkreutz was struck while walking in a crosswalk
on Silver Star Road near the BX Swan Lake fire hall last Wednesday
night. Police and the coroner are still investigating the case, but speed
and alcohol are not considered factors on the part of the male driver
who was in his 70's. RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk says the victim was wearing dark
clothing, which may have made it difficult for the driver to see him,
similar to another fatal incident involving 56 year old pedestrian,
Debbie Hay, who was hit the night before, on Okanagan Landing Road. "We're just saying to people (pedestrians), wear some clothing that can be seen, including with reflective materials." Molendyk says Mr. Breitkreutz lived not far from the crash scene, and had probably walked the road many times.
