RBC Bid Scores Free Use Of Wesbild

Organizers will get to use Wesbild Centre for free for more than 10 days, if Vernon gets the bid to host the Royal Bank Cup hockey tournament in 2014. The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee gave that approval today, amounting to 22 thousand dollars in rental fees and another seven-thousand in potential lost revenue. Board chair Mike Macnabb says the committee also made it clear, the Regional District of North Okanagan won't be picking up any losses the tournament may incur.  He tells Kiss FM, "I hope that they can make a go of it. I just don't want to be left with a very large sum of money that we have to kick in as happened a few years ago with a curling event, where we were left funding a $40,000 shortfall." Macnabb had a problem supporting the request, although when it came down to the vote, he did.. "First of all there was a lot of unknowns coming forward. Some of the information was incorrect when it was first presented, and we are struggling with an organization that we don't really have a great deal of background with." The RBC bid committee dropped an earlier request to get a cut of Wesbild's concession revenues during the event. The bid committee told the committee in an earlier presentation, Wesbild Centre will get some sort of legacy from hosting the event, with a big replay screen one possibility. Hockey Canada will announce the successful bidder for the event at this year's RBC tournament in Humboldt Saskatchewan.
