Time For 'Tough' Budget Decisions

It's getting down to crunch time for Vernon council on the city's new budget. Mayor Rob Sawatzky says today could be when some tough decisions are made including the need for a pavement management system with a price tag of over a million dollars. He tells Kiss FM, "We feel we have to do it philosophically, because it's one of those projects that if you put it off, the cost immediately starts multiplying." It would fund normal upkeep on city roads like crack sealing and maintenance. Uses for the current library building will also be discussed today. The structure in the civic complex will be vacated this spring when the new library on 30th Avenue opens. The leading idea is to use the building for city staff who are currently in several buildings around the downtown. At last report, the budget carried a 3.7 percent tax increase.
