RCMP cruiser that was hit by a 35-year-old male speeding suspected drunk driver, injuring Const. Philip Crack and an auxiliary Const. Shelley Ullery on Hwy. 16 near Ferry Island on Dec. 30, 2011 while they monitored traffic. Charged with impaired driving and dangerous driving is David Schiffer of the Czech Republic.A suspected drunk driver going more than double the speed limit slammed into a RCMP police cruiser doing speed checks at the side of the road in Terrace, sending two officers to hospital. “This is exactly why our members are out in full force during the holiday season,” says Terrace RCMP Sgt. Pam Scott of traffic services. “Some people just don’t seem to get the message, drunk driving injures and kills.” A 35-year-old male from the Czech Republic working in Terrace is facing impaired driving and dangerous driving charges. RCMP Const. Philip Crack and auxiliary Const. Shelley Ullery were sitting in the marked car on Highway 16 near Ferry Island on Friday evening when a white van lost control and smashed into the car, according to an RCMP release. “Seconds prior to the collision the van had been clocked on radar at over 120 kilometres per hour in the 50 kilometre zone,” the release said. “As the van approached and applied the brakes, it slid sideways and impacted the police vehicle from the rear.” The officers and the driver of the van were treated in hospital and released. “This could have been tragic”, says Terrace Cmdr. Insp. Dana Hart. “Especially at this time of the year. Both Const. Crack and auxiliary Const. Ullery have families. Just like all of our members, they are out there risking their lives to keep others safe.” Crack works for traffic services and Ullery is a volunteer with the auxiliary program. Police say damage to both vehicles is extensive. Charged is David Schiffer.
