A short release issued just after noon Tuesday signalled the official
departure of Vancouver city planning director Brent Toderian. “Following
due consideration, it has been determined that it is an appropriate
time for a change in the leadership in the Planning Department,” said
the release. “Today, City Council endorsed and confirmed that
Brent Toderian will be moving on from the position of Director of
Planning at the City of Vancouver,” the release continued. “An international search will be conducted for the new director of planning.” The news came after the conclusion of an in-camera meeting of council. Toderian had been in the position for six years after being hired during the tenure of former mayor Sam Sullivan. A
source at city hall indicated his position would be filled on an
interim basis by senior staff in the planning and community services
department. The search for his replacement could take as long as six months. Despite being forced to ‘move on’, Toderian is entitled to a year’s salary -- which is approximately $200,000. Toderian’s
dismissal had been widely reported earlier Tuesday but because it was a
human resources issue council had to deal with it in-camera after its
morning session. Toderian came to Vancouver from Calgary to fill
the influential position, working to implement Sullivan’s EcoDensity
program of introducing more density to Vancouver. There had been reports of friction between Toderian and some developers.
