A significant honour has been bestowed on Ken and Jan Waldon for years of tireless volunteering. The couple were named Good Citizen during a surprise ceremony at the Vernon RCMP detachment Wednesday. “Thank you so much for this wonderful honour,” said Jan, who turns 74 years old Saturday. The couple thought they were visiting the RCMP detachment for a meeting of Crime Stoppers, which they have both volunteered for. Besides Crime Stoppers, they have also participated in
the Friends of Fintry, All Saints Anglican Church, the Vernon Prostate
Support Group, Mackie Lake House, the B.C. Winter Games, the North
Okanagan Community Concert Association, Citizens on Patrol and the World
Cup cross-country skiing championship. “It’s an unexpected and great honour but there are many more people in the community deserving than we are,” said Ken, 77. Jan grew up in Vernon, while Ken was born in Brandon,
Man. They have been married for 50 years and moved to the Vernon area in
1994.
The Good Citizen award was presented by Junior Chamber International and the City of Vernon. The Waldons will take part in Saturday’s Vernon Winter
Carnival parade and they will be officially recognized during the Winter
Break Out event Tuesday at the Schubert Centre.
