Former MP eyes MLA's chair

A man who once represented the South Okanagan in Ottawa has launched a bid to enter provincial politics, after failing to win a seat as a school trustee.  Jim Hart declared this week he will seek the B.C. Conservative nomination in the riding of Vernon-Monashee.  He announced his intention at a meeting attended by about 40 party supporters. "It's great to see so many people come out to hear what the B.C. Conservatives have to say," said Ian Tribes, the party's constituency association president.  "It shows that more and more people are realizing what a mess the NDP and the Liberals have made over the past two decades, and that we need a new direction."  Vernon-Monashee is currently held by Eric Foster of the Liberals.  Hart was a member of Parliament for the riding based around Penticton from 1993 to 2000, representing the Reform party and then the Canadian Alliance.  He stepped down to create a byelection that resulted in a victory for Stockwell Day, then leader of the Canadian Alliance.
