Local Groups Benefit From Proceeds Of Crime - $44,500 handed out

"A good year for enforcement, a bad year for criminals."  That's how the local MLA kicked of a media conference Monday morning bring money from the province.  The province is handing out 5.5 million dollars to crime prevention programs.  Vernon Monashee MLA Eric Foster says the money is from the Civil Forfeiture Fund.   Foster is distributing cheques for $44,500 from the fund. He says the money comes from police seizures across the province of homes, cars, boats and planes that were used in crimes. The Vernon Women's Transition House is getting $35,600 for three programs. A Violence Is Preventable program in schools, and the Integrated Case Assessment program, will each see $5,0000.  But Debby Hamilton says the majority of the money will be for a Child Advocacy Centre so children who are victims can go to one place for services,  interviews and even medical exams.   She says this is seed money to establish the protocols and relationships and hopefully will be the spring point for something bigger.  In the last year 50 children in the area have sought counselling for abuse. $8,900 dollars goes to the Vernon RCMP for new surveillance equipment and training.  Vernon RCMP  Superintendent, Reg Burgess says they'll used the new hi-tech surveillance equipment to help them with surveillance of rural grow-ops, which he says is very difficult in a small town.
