The Vernon School District has it's preliminary budget started for the 2012-13 school year. Board chair Bill Turanski says it's an 83.1 million dollar document. "Projected enrolment is likely to decrease by 124 students, and most of those will be at the secondary school level." Turanski says that will mean the loss of six full time teaching positions, although it could be offset by an increase in eight international students. The district will also be continuing it's two week spring breaks. Vernon teachers president Bruce Cummings says the district is facing a one million dollar budget shortfall, but reserve funds will be used to cover much of that. Turanski says a Learning Improvement Fund grant from the province should help, it's just under 900 thousand dollars "That money has not been allocated yet so we're not sure how it will be used." The district's also being given a 164 thousand dollar grant to help struggling readers. As far as teachers banning extracurricular activities, Turanski says it's still too early to asses impact.
