Speed Watch keeping on eye on you

The Speed Watch Program will be in effect starting at 7:30 a.m. April 4th.
The program, which operates with support of ICBC and their Road Sense initiative,  is directly coordinated by Vernon/ North Okanagan RCMP Safe Communities Unit and is operated by RCMP/Citizens on Patrol volunteers throughout the Vernon area. The purpose of the Speed Watch program is to enhance the safety and educate drivers. This is done by increasing the level of awareness surrounding the issues of unsafe speed and dangerous driving and reducing the incidents of speeding by reflecting driver's speed and reinforcing the speed limit in that zone. Our trained volunteers use digital speed reader boards and a radar unit and concentrate on areas where speeding is a major hazard. Volunteers will be initially concentrating on school zones in order to keep the motoring public aware of the change in speed now that students are back in class. There will be occasions when you will find our Speed Watch operatives working with the City of Vernon’s RCMP. These 2-strike operations may land you a ticket should you choose to ignore the Citizens on Patrol set up. Expect to see Speed Watch operations around the City of Vernon and please remember these volunteers are actively working to make our City a safer place to work, raise children and live.
