The next step for a proposed track and field facility in Coldstream, could be a referendum. Regional district staff are recommending Greater Vernon Advisory Committee directors get public consent to borrow 8.5 million dollars to build the complex on ten acres of farm land next to Okanagan College. Vernon mayor Rob Sawatzky feels they need to get going on the plan. "Exactly. It's a long process and it's a big ticket item, and we really need reflection and input from the community and the stakeholders." As part of approving the use of farm land for the project, the Agricultural Land Commission has stated the venue has to be built by November 2014. In order to meet that timeline, RDNO staff say a referendum would need to be held late this year or early 2013. Another option would be to ask the ALC if it will extend the deadline. Household taxes would go up an estimated $17-20, if it's approved. Sawatzky realizes the cost and economic conditions will be factors. "Every time you're trying to do major improvements in the community there's kind of a tide economically and philosophically when people are in the mood to take on that kind of public debt for the public good." The idea for the Olympic sized rubberized running track and artificial playing field was first proposed in November 2010.
