Horse Races Cancelled

Kin Race TrackOfficials have had to cancel the first day of horse racing at Vernon's Kin Race Track.  It was set for this Sunday, but they don't have enough horses. Okanagan Equestrian Society president Ed Woolley says they were four horses short of filling a full race card. "We apologize to anybody who is inconveneienced by this decision." He says the available horses was depleted due to a large number of races the previous weekend in Princeton and Vancouver, and owners wanting to rest their animals. "The shortage of horses also highlights another industry-wide issue that race tracks are forced to contend with, in that reduction of purse money over the last few years has led to fewer people breeding and buying horses. This has led to a drop in the racehorse population and an increasing difficulty in filling race cards at not only smaller tracks like Vernon, but also at larger ones such as Hastings in Vancouver." The Vernon races planned for July 15th and 29th and August 5th are still expected to go ahead. "With this extra weekend off, we will have more horses ready and available for the July 15th races," said Woolley.
