No quick decision on the future of O'Keefe Ranch

No rash decisions will be made regarding O'Keefe Ranch's financial plight. Instead of accepting the recommendations of a task force considering how to improve budget stability at the historic site, Vernon council asked city staff Monday to review the report and bring back some direction. "We will provide more thorough analysis," said Will Pearce, Vernon's chief administrative officer. The task force has made a number of recommendations for increasing attendance, including a chili cook-off, outdoor concerts, youth recreation programs, an ice cream station, a farmers market and a community garden. It's also been suggested that the ranch manager be kept on over winter to focus on marketing and maintenance and that $20,000 a year be put into a reserve fund for capital improvements. The city-owned ranch currently receives $150,000 a year from Vernon council for operations. Look for more details in Wednesday's Morning Star.
