The cost to get fit in Greater Vernon's recreation facilities is going up. Greater Vernon Advisory Committee members have approved fee hikes of 2.37 percent for everything from public swimming to ice rentals, starting September 1. The increases are needed to meet cost of living jumps in utilities and wages. It means adults will pay an extra ten cents for public swimming and skating, to around $5. The fees will be reviewed again in March, when they could be reduced, with the end of the HST. The board also directed RDNO staff to have a policy discussion about how future rates are set.

On April 1, 2013 as the 12% HST will disappear in B.C. the only extra tax on the base charges will be the 5% GST. Before this time the GVAC committee will decide whether to reduce the total charges by 7% or extend the rates and pocket this tax reduction.
