Proposed Changes to Bylaw. P.102 |
A Vernon councillor is concerned city residents could face fines if they want to protect themselves from wildlife. Mary Jo O'Keefe is opposed to outlawing irritant gases like bear spray--other than in so called natural wildlife areas--in a proposed new city weapons bylaw. "Now everyone in town who goes for walks or a jog and they have bear spray to scare away coyotes or dogs, it's illegal to carry this stuff. We shouldn't be making innocent people into criminals for something so minor," says O'Keefe. Bylaws manager Clint Kanester says bear spray is being included in the bylaw at the suggestion of police, as it can be used for criminal acts. But O'Keefe doesn't think that will be a deterrent. "I think we're just making life hard to live in sort of a normal way." Violators could be fined 500 dollars.
