The Upper Room Mission appears poised to save $9,200 on a water line bill. The Vernon based social agency asked the Regional District of North Okanagan for relief from the fee back in the fall of 2011. RDNO recently asked its members to approve the spending as neither they nor the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee have authority for such a grant. Both Lumby and Spallumcheen said yes Monday night at their respective meetings. Spallumcheen Mayor Janice Brown says they recognize there are residents outside of Vernon who use the service. "We did support giving them our portion which is $545. We feel they are a really worthwhile organization. It helps people from the whole Okanagan, and it's there if people from Spallumcheen need it, " says Brown. Lumby Mayor Kevin Acton had similar sentiments. "We do understand there's people from Lumby that use the Upper Room Mission, and we appreciate everything they do for the people who are sort of down and out, so we want to make sure we participate in giving them some sort of a hand." The village's share is $159. Vernon, Armstrong and Enderby councils earlier gave their approvals. The Mission, located on 27th Avenue in Vernon, provides meals and a chapel service to people in need.
