New Park Pitched For Foothills

Two groups are encouraging local government to get behind a new natural park above the Foothills neighborhood. The Ribbons of Green Trails Society and Foothills Community Association say the 50 acre site currently has three private owners, but at least one supports the park idea, and the others are neutral.  Greater Vernon Advisory Committee chair Mike Macnabb says the issue will be discussed, but he's not not sure they could afford the land. "Nobody is questioning whether we should have a park up there, but it's just about how do you go about getting it with the cost of those properties? The way that it's zoned, the seller could make a fair bit of money off of it." Macnabb says the city of Vernon also has an opportunity to put a park in. The proponents say the site, which is in Vernon, is too steep to allow development, and some people already use it for trails. The site currently goes by Jackass Hill, but the proposed name for the park is Foothills Bluff Park. GVAC got presentations from Wynn Polnicky of the Foothills group who felt it would be a natural jewel and used by all Greater Vernon resident and tourists, possibly linking up with the Grey Canal and trail network. Naturalist Roseanne Van Ee also spoke in favour of the plan.
