Carpool.caOkanagan commuters are asked to share a ride as part of the 6th annual Regional Carpool Week. Wendy Majewski, transportation demand management coordinator from the city of Vernon says it runs from October 22nd to the 26th.  "This is an Okanagan regional carpool week, so we are trying to encourage commuters to take part. Carpooling helps to decrease the amount of traffic." Majewski says it can also decrease car costs and help the environment. Statistics Canada says the average Canadian household spends $12,000 a year on transportation, second only to shelter. "You may not be able to car pool every day of the week but at least try it once or twice a week. That lowers the number of vehicles on the roads," says Majewski, who carpools from her home in Kelowna to Vernon. You can register for the program-- and be eligible to win prizes-- by going to www.carpool.ca. Kelowna, Penticton, Oliver, Summerland and Peachland are also taking part, and helping to fund the program.
