BX park purchase considered

By Richard Rolke - Vernon Morning Star Published: November 07, 2012 1:00 AM
Financial constraints and multiple demands may impact the ability to expand Greater Vernon’s parks inventory.  There have been suggestions the Regional District of North Okanagan should buy 67 hectares for sale next to BX Ranch Park, which is 11 hectares in size. The issue will be discussed by the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee Thursday but chairperson Mike Macnabb insists there is no guarantee  an acquisition will be pursued. “We have a lot of pressure,” said Macnabb of other potential park sites in the community. “I was talking to someone who is interested in parkland in the Commonage.” Macnabb expects the 67 hectares could cost millions of dollars and he says the ability of taxpayers to acquire land and develop parks is limited. The land is zoned for country residential lots. “The issue came up at a meeting with the BX Community Association and the feeling was it would be better used as a park,” said Macnabb. “I am not sure what it could be used for but there is some potential there.” Resident Randy Schellenberg is lobbying GVAC to purchase the 67 hectares. “There is a very narrow window of opportunity and the regional district needs to act fast,” he said. “If someone places a full-price offer, it could be gone.” Schellenberger says a number of community needs could be met by purchasing the site. “It would link the Mutrie Road dog park with BX Ranch Park,” he said. “The upper area is level and the planners could plan for a variety of recreational opportunities.”
