City To Get Info On Arts/Culture Sites

Proposed city owned site for Vernon Art GalleryMore sites could be considered for a new Vernon art gallery and museum.  Vernon council has approved a motion to get a staff report on the possible city owned locations for the facilities. Mayor Rob Sawatzky says they want to make sure all the  proposals are considered by the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee  which will decide if the venues will be on a referendum next spring. "To all of us who are going to be involved in discussions on planning, master planning and long term planning for arts and culture downtown." Councillor Bob Spiers felt council was traveling on old ground. "I originally voted against it. I think the only question in front of us at GVAC is whether those facilities are allowed to go on the referendum (for next April)." The art gallery could go on the former Vernon Flower Shop site on 31st Ave, but others on council would like to explore the idea of both facilities on the former Coldstream Hotel site. Meantime, if the former Vernon Flower Shop site by Cenotaph Park is used for a new art gallery, the city has agreed to sell it to RDNO at its cost of $315,000, so it can be owned by the regional partners, a request made earlier by Coldstream director Jim Garlick.
