More Tinkering With Weapons Bylaw

Irritant gases are out, but bear bangers remain in Vernon's proposed new weapons and firearms bylaw. Council has given three readings to what would be the first update to the bylaw in more than 35 years. Councillor Catherine Lord says people who carry bear spray for protection won't face penalties, and the rules for bow hunting have been clarified. "There is quite a bit of bow hunting that is going on, articularly in the Okanagan Landing, and I am always concerned about the safety of kids. I've seen too many things where kids get involved." Meantime, if the bylaw get final approval, people using bear bangers to scare away wildlife will have to get a permit to use them in the city. Councillor Patrick Nicol was the lone opponent to giving three readings to the bylaw.
