Vernon politicians are split on how proposed cultural facilities should proceed. After lengthy debate Tuesday, council decided to set
aside part of its Nov. 26 agenda to consider whether it will support a
borrowing referendum in the spring for a new museum and art gallery. “We can have a discussion on what Vernon’s position should be,” said Coun. Bob Spiers. Coun. Mary-Jo O'Keefe is concerned that the Regional
District of North Okanagan will not make a decision on a referendum
until January and that could create time constraints for proponents of
the gallery and museum. “Are we being fair to them and giving them enough time to get their votes together?” she said. Coun. Patrick Nicol points out that cultural services
aren't just a matter for Vernon to address because Coldstream and the electoral areas are also partners. "It has to go through Greater Vernon (Advisory Committee), that's the path," he said. One of the issues to be resolved is whether there would be a single building for both agencies or separate structures. Look for more in Wednesday's Morning Star.
