Vernon firefighters are helping spark donations for the Salvation Army.  Local smoke-eaters are volunteering their off-duty time to man kettles located outside a number of stores, with the campaign $72,000 off its goal of $140,000. The campaign ends December 24th.The Sally Ann's David MacBain says an upcoming event will boost the total. "Wal Mart will match up to $100,000 across the country, so we're looking to have great donations Thursday at Wal Mart."

Meantime, struggling families around Vernon will get a timely Christmas gift from the Salvation Army this week. MacBain says the demand for hampers is about the same as last year. "We've interviewed 831 households to date, and we expect to reach the 850 we prepared for in 2011, so we do appreciate the community support." The United Way's regional campaign is at $138,000 of the target of $300,000 or 46%. "If United Way does not get close to our goal, what are at risk are after-school programs, parent & tot programs, and youth programs in several of our North Okanagan communities. United Way also funds programs that help seniors, the disadvantaged and those with disabilities be self-reliant, as well as a no-cost prenatal nutrition program," said Linda Yule, Executive Director.
