A North Okanagan man's countless hours of volunteer service have been recognized. Don Blakely has been presented with the National Search and Rescue Program's Award of Excellence at a ceremony in Toronto. The organization says Blakely's work has improved the SAR response, and thousands of volunteers and their families have benefited from his hard work and dedication the last 24 years. Among Blakely's many duties and accomplishments has been as the search and rescue coordinator for the firestorm emergencies in 1998 and 2003. When not volunteering for SAR, Blakely is a lawyer who lives in Armstrong.

When someone in Vernon gets lost, the authorities search for Don Blakely.
And for being the go-to guy for 24 years, the search-and-rescue
volunteer won the Award of Excellence for Exemplary Service from the
National Search and Rescue Secretariat. "Without Mr. Blakely's energetic, determined, thoughtful and detailed
approach, the SAR service throughout Canada and particularly in B.C.
would not be what it is today," reads part of the commendation Blakely
received during a national conference in Toronto. (more)
