Crime stats around the North Okanagan ended the year on a negative note. RCMP Superintendent Reg Burgess told Vernon council, the number of criminal code files were up by about 6.6 percent over the final two quarters of 2012, including a spike in property crimes. Mayor Rob Sawatzky doesn't think it's a big cause for concern. "Those were minor blips, and (police) feel it's purely related to two prolific offenders who are usually people with substance abuse and mental health issues." Sawatzky says when you have a low crime rate, it doesn't take a lot statistically, to raise the rate a lot. When all four quarters are considered, criminal code files were down 1.28 percent in 2012. Burgess says traffic enforcement by police rose 51% at Greater Vernon last year.
