It will be bright city lights once a major facelift is completed. The City of Vernon will spend about $20,000 more than
expected on street lights during the revitalization of 30th Avenue from
33rd to 35th streets. “We want to be consistent with the previous
(revitalization) phases and keep with the esthetics,” said Mark
Dowhaniuk, infrastructure engineer. The original budget for lights was $180,000. “We’re now talking about a 20 to 30 per cent increase
in lighting,” said Dowhaniuk, adding that this should create a welcoming
atmosphere for residents. The entire revitalization project is estimated to cost $2 million but the actual figure will be known once tenders close. “We hope to get the work underway in the middle of March and we’re on target for that,” said Dowhaniuk. The project should be completed by June 21. The eastern sections of 30th Avenue were revitalized
years ago but property owners between 33rd and 35th streets previously
opposed participation because of the cost. However, in November 2012, a majority of the property
owners agreed to provide $250,000 for street furniture, decorative
bricks and twinkle lights. The city will contribute the remainder of the $2 million for sewer, water and asphalt upgrades. “All of the businesses, property owners and the city are excited about the project starting,” said Dowhaniuk.

Don Quixote Note: The original increase for this project caused by the lighting was $200,000 as reported at
http://vernonblog.blogspot.ca/2013/02/written-by-peter-mcintyre-107.html but it appears that this is the total amount budgeted for lighting if we take the original 180,000 and add this $20,000 shortfall. The total electrical portion of the budget (shown below ) was $215,000.
