RDNO Bows Out Of Rail Line Bid

The Regional District of North Okanagan is stepping back from buying the abandoned Canadian Pacific rail line from Armstrong to Grindrod. RDNO chair Patrick Nicol says Wednesday was the deadline, and they've decided not to proceed due to the cost. The Canadian Transport Authority puts a "net salvage value" on the land, track and leases at $3.2 million. RDNO had offered $3.5 million, but CP wanted 18.7 million, according to a report filed with Enderby council. Despite no deal, Nicol says the land will still be protected. "It can not be turned into something that communities do not want without our permission. It's in our official community plan in those areas." The regional district had started it's bid after CP shut the line down in 2009, hoping to save it for business or recreation.
