Vernon's top cop says a significant jump in criminal code cases in the city can be attributed to just a few people. Superintendent Reg Burgess told council, property and auto crime cases jumped 16 percent in the first quarter, mostly due to a crime spree by two prolific offenders. He says those suspects have since been caught so he expects the stats to return to normal for the current quarter. ("They) became highly active and were able to avoid detection for some time before being captured. It is this type of activity that ties up a significant amount of police resources and demands a concentrated effort, and which our new Prolific Offender management program will address," states Burgess. Meantime, Burgess says they've had to shuffle some programs due to having 23 to 27 officers out of service in the first quarter due to significant injuries or medical issues. "Despite the continuing trend of reduced resources due to medical leave we continue to work closely with Division staffing to ensure that we maintain our operational resources as best we can," Burgess says.
