Members of Vernon Search
and Rescue combined their water and land resources to make a dramatic
rescue Saturday afternoon near Cousens Bay on Kalamalka Lake. A dramatic rescue which combined land and water resources of Vernon
Search and Rescue took place Saturday afternoon in the vicinity of
Cousens Bay in Kalamalka Lake Park near the North Okanagan city. A man was thrown from his horse while riding, cracked his head in the
mishap and required emergency medical treatment. It was later
determined, once he was stabilized, that due to the nature of his
injuries, that he should be transported by boat, rather than all terrain
vehicle, to hospital. "When we got there, an ambulance crew had him packaged up and ready
to go," explained Leigh Pearson, search manager for Vernon Search and
Rescue. He was then transported on the water to a waiting ambulance in
Coldstream, then taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital for further treatment. "Our other option was to use an ATV," said Pearson. "But it's not a
very smooth ride and with a head injury you just never know." "From what the guys were saying, it (head injury) looked to be a pretty serious one." Although conditions in much of the Okanagan Valley Saturday were very
windy and blustery, Pearson said calm conditions and smooth water on
Kalamalka Lake made the choice an easy one. No word was available on the man's condition at press time. Meanwhile, the man's companions, who were also riding at the time, captured the horse and returned him to his home.
